What to Wear:

Warm layers, gloves and hats. Wool socks and sturdy shoes are helpful. Nights can be very cold. Bring a flashlight. We will provide red cellophane covers to protect your night vision.

    • Come see the Sun! RFO will provide solar telescopes to view the Sun safely. We'll also have a display table with information about visiting the observatory, volunteering with us, and all the activities that make RFO the busiest place for astronomy in Northern California

  • Monday, 5/9/2016 - Mercury Transit
    Time: 7 AM - 12 Noon
    • RFO will be open this morning with solar telescopes operating to observe the planet Mercury passing across the face of the sun. Already in progress at sunrise, the transit will end at about 11:40am. Come and join us to observe this fairly rare event.
  • Monday, 5/9/2016 - RFO on KSVY and Sonoma TV
    Time: 9 AM - 12 Midnight (at on air)
    • RFO will be on the air at 9:20AM for the Mercury Transit of the Sun. Sonoma TV channel 27 (live stream http://www.svtv27.com/svtv-live-stream/) and KSVY 91.3FM. Come on up to RFO and tune us in!

    Time: 10 AM - 4 PM (at California Academy of Sciences)
    • RFO docents will be available at the California Academy of Sciences for Astronomy Day. We will provide information about the observatory. Come and join us!

    Time: 11 AM - 3 PM
    • Come and view our closest star and learn about sunspots, prominences, flares and more. We observe with both visible light and radio telescopes.
  • Saturday, 5/14/2016 - Public Star Party - Astronomy Day
    Time: 8 PM - 12 Midnight
    • We have classroom presentations and dark sky telescope observing all evening. Please arrive by 11pm. One of two annual Astronomy Days, we focus on observing the moon this evening. Jupiter will also be a major focus. Later, after about 11pm, we can turn out attention to Saturn and, especially, Mars, which is very near one of its rare oppositions.

    Time: 8 PM - 12 Midnight
    • We have classroom presentations and dark sky telescope observing all evening. Please arrive by 11pm. Saturn and Mars are both now at their biggest and brightest, so will dominate our attention tonight. We have to wait for more than 2 years to get another opportunity this good to view Mars. And Jupiter is still a good target this evening.
  • Tuesday, 6/7/2016 - Night Sky Summer Series
