What to Wear:

Warm layers, gloves and hats. Wool socks and sturdy shoes are helpful. Nights can be very cold. Bring a flashlight. We will provide red cellophane covers to protect your night vision.

With Jupiter at opposition, we will focus particularly on this giant planet and its four large moons. The moon Io and its shadow transit Jupiter's disk this evening from about 10pm until after midnight.

Jupiter will also be a major focus. Later, after about 11pm, we can turn out attention to Saturn and, especially, Mars, which is very near one of its rare oppositions.

Saturn and Mars are both now at their biggest and brightest, so will dominate our attention tonight. We have to wait for more than 2 years to get another opportunity this good to view Mars. And Jupiter is still a good target this evening.

    • RFO will be open this night for observing the Perseid Meteor Shower. Note that a 65% gibbous moon will wash out the meteors until after it sets around 1:20am. So the best viewing will be between 1:30am and 5:00am.
