What to Wear:

Warm layers, gloves and hats. Wool socks and sturdy shoes are helpful. Nights can be very cold. Bring a flashlight. We will provide red cellophane covers to protect your night vision.

    • Come and view our closest star and learn about sunspots, prominences, flares and more. We observe with both visible light and radio telescopes.

    • We focus on Mars this evening, which is now just past opposition. Note that Mars observing will occur late, with the best observing after 11pm.

  • Sunday, 8/12/2018 - Perseids Event
    Time: 8:30 PM - 12 Midnight
    • Observe the Perseid Meteor Shower at RFO. The observatory will be open and the telescopes operating from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. There will be a short presentation about the Perseids at 9:00. After that, the show is outdoors! Note that the meteors don't get started until about 11 p.m. with best viewing in the late a.m. hours. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, wool caps and red lights. The area around RFO will be a strict no white light zone. There will be no observatory fee this night, but the Park's parking fee still applies.
  • Wednesday, 8/22/2018 - Focus on the Moon
    Time: 8 PM - 12 Midnight
    • Focus on the Moon is a limited ticket event. An in-depth presentation about our nearest cosmic neighbor is followed by viewing with RFO's three main telescopes. The general public is invited to purchase tickets via
