Research at RFO

Astronomy is one of the few scientific fields in which amateur observers don't just contribute to research — they are essential to it. The universe contains far more objects worth studying than professional telescopes can ever cover, and trained volunteers working with research-grade instruments can produce data that genuinely advances scientific understanding.

The RFO Research Committee uses the RC20, our 20-inch Ritchey-Chrétien telescope in the East Wing of the observatory, to conduct original astronomical research in photometry, astrometry, and spectroscopy. Our work includes monitoring variable stars, observing exoplanet transits, measuring double star positions, and contributing data to the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO). High school and college students are active participants, and several student-led projects have been published in peer-reviewed journals.

The committee meets monthly and welcomes new members at all experience levels.

Are you interested in getting involved in research? Send us an email at [email protected]. We encourage high school and college students to contact us!
